What To Do with the Elevator Once You’ve Traveled up It

The elevator. It’s a common metaphor for the journey to success. And it’s not one that you’re likely to travel up alone. For example, most people need someone to get them onto the elevator, to begin with.

The Elevator Going Up

It’s not usually a smooth ride up either. Once you’re in the elevator, you might get off on the wrong floor. In fact, the chances are good that you will do exactly that. Sometimes there’ll be a person (or two) who keep you from getting off on level 3 when you can go higher. It’s with the encouragement and assistance of those around you that you learn, challenge, and motivate yourself to get to the top in that elevator. The top is where you get when you reach a long-term monetary goal.

If You Get to the Top

Not everyone reaches the top quickly, if at all. But, “if you’ve done well, it’s your obligation to spend a good portion of your time sending the elevator back down,” says actor and producer Kevin Spacey.

Read that quote again. Yes, it’s another metaphor. Essentially what he means is that now that you’ve gotten to a certain level of monetary success it’s your turn to help others with the knowledge you’ve gained, believing in their skills, and helping move their elevators up to higher floors. And if you feel you might not quite be the right person to do so, introduce them to someone who you think can help.
